The GGU Matchplay Championship was held at Ralston Golf Club on the 20th to 25th July.

One of West Central Scotland's top golf clubs, Ralston is an extremely well maintained parkland course designed by James Braid with both a par and standard scratch of 70.  The club is situated on the boundary between Glasgow and Paisley, just a 10-minute drive from Glasgow city centre.

Competition schedule - the competition tee-times were as follows -

  • 1st round - Tuesday 20th July (pm)
  • 2nd round - Thursday 22nd July (pm)
  • Semi Finals - Sunday 25th July (Morning)
  • Final - Sunday 25th July (Afternoon)

The West of Scotland  experienced one of the best periods of warm, sunny weather for quite some time, and as a result all of the matches were played in ideal conditions. Although the day of the final started overcast and quite cool, it soon warmed up around at  ten o'clock and stayed sunny and hot at 23C for the rest of the day.

The golf course and its greens were in super condition and the recent dry weather saw a lot of run on the fairways.

The first semi- final involved Barry Wilson of Sandyhills and Fraser Grant of the home club Ralston. The latter got off to a flying start and maintained a commanding lead for the whole match. The second match saw Blair Dalgelish also of Ralston play Thomas Martin of Sandyhills and this was a tight affair with Thomas Martin eventually getting the upper hand.

The final between Fraser and Thomas was played in very hot conditions which may not have suited Thomas, he saw Fraser build a significant early lead and despite his every effort and some fine play it was not enough to change the course of the match, Fraser achieved a convincing victory and is the 2021 GGU Matchplay Champion.

Both morning matches and the Final attracted a small but enthusiastic gathering of fans who enjoyed seeing some great golf.
