West of Scotland Boys' League Fixture Number 3 - GGU vs Renfrewshire Away

Venue: - Williamwood Golf Club, Sunday, August 28th Usual Format -  four U16 Matches, followed by the four U18 Matches. Williamwood was presented in excellent condition. On what was literally one of the last balmy days of summer with not a breath of air, the scene was set for some excellent scoring. The Glasgow U16s lost all four of their matches and the U18s shared the honours at two matches each. Final Score 6-2 to Renfrewshire Boys.

What the final score sheet does not show is the closeness of nearly all the matches, with four going down the eighteenth and another the seventeenth. The development of a larger squad bodes well for the future, several of our first choice team players were committed elsewhere, however those who were available played well  in a committed manner and did the GGU proud. Renfrewshire were worthy opponents and gracious hosts and a return to Williamwood was an inspired choice. Special mention to John Hamilton, playing in his first County Boys Match just loosing out to Tom Hepburn with the final put on the final green.

West of Scotland Boys' League Fixture Number 4 GGU vs Ayrshire - Home Match - At Sandyhills Golf Club on the 4th of September - Final County match of the year
Format - four Under 16 Matches, followed by four U18 Matches

Thankfully, the poor overnight weather abated and a pleasant autumn day greeted the eight matches as they got underway at noon. As had been the case all season, all the matches were closely contested. As the tie developed Ayrshire established a 3-2 lead, the last 3 matches would be critical to the final result, all these matches went to the eighteenth and a thrilling climax unfolded.

A crowd gathered around the eighteenth green, players, officials, supporters and parents. They saw Cameron Burns win one up to level the score. Then Sean Falconer also won one up to gain the lead for the first time 4-3. Finally, Joe Lynch secured a vital half point by finishing his match all square with a killer putt from the edge of the green right into the heart of the cup. Final score 4.5 - 3.5. A great result for a group of boys who developed over the season into a real team. Indeed the most pleasing aspect of this year's campaign has been the spirit of camaraderie exhibited by our boys - a true Band of Brothers, supporting each other and playing with pride in the colours of the county.

During the season, 16 boys played for the County. Sean Falconer played four times (W2,L1,D1). Andrew Corrigan played three times (W2,L1). and Bobby Gray also played three times (W1,L2). Nine other boys played twice and a further four played once each. The number of boys available for selection through the year is a major step forward for the Junior Development Programme.

The final Result for the Season will show two wins (against Dunbartonshire and Ayrshire) and two losses (against Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire). So a good year, on which we can build, for the future.
The final Boys' Team appearance this year will be at the Scottish Boys' Area Team Championships at Gleddoch GC - Sunday 11th September. Playing the two Foursomes Matches in the morning will be Charlie Greaves and Bobby Gray followed by Matty Hughes and Joe Lynch. All four will then play in the afternoon singles. We wish all the boys an enjoyable and successful competition.
