England’s John Kennedy was today crowned Scottish Senior Men’s Open champion – after a monster birdie putt on the penultimate hole helped him get over the line. The Durham-based golfer posted rounds of 67, 70 and 72 for a four-under par total at Montrose Golf Links and a two-shot win ahead of his nearest challenger, Glasgow Golf Club’s John Laurie. In fact, Laurie and Kennedy were locked together in the lead at three-under par facing similar birdie putts on the 53rd hole.

By that stage the third member of the final group, England’s Rupert Kellock, had drifted out of the picture. Kellock had held the overnight lead and still had a two-shot advantage going into the back nine before a run of dropped shots saw him fall away. But while the Sunningdale golfer faltered, Laurie and Kennedy were tied for the lead until the championship’s defining moment.

While Laurie (pictured above) left his birdie putt five foot short, Kennedy, representing Consett Golf Club,  drained his from 30 feet.
